Captain’s Blog (September)

Captain’s Blog (G Murphy)

September has been a particularly busy month for myself and the Club. However, things are starting to tail off a little as we head towards the autumn. The course has again, throughout the month, been in great shape with the dedication of David and his staff.

Consett hosted the Durham County Mixed Foursomes competition over 3 days and 2 weekends with Heworth being the eventual champions and congratulations to them. Our team of Mark Bonser and Annette Walton were unlucky to lose at the 19th hole on the second day, but put up an excellent performance. The County officials were very complimentary about the condition of the course and the food that was served, particularly on the final day when a full clubhouse catered for well over 100 people. Well done to Brian and Nicola again for a terrific effort, with a special thanks to Joanne and her staff for making things run smoothly.

On a personal note it was great to play a number of different courses in County Captain competitions, including Whickham and Eaglescliffe. I also played Close House with Vice-Captain Shaun Stokoe and Paul Stonehouse (Vice-Captain for next year) as the guest of Team Sponsor Malcolm Williams. A big thanks to Malcolm for a great day and for his hospitality from the 3 of us.

I played in the final Seniors competition of the season which was, as usual, well subscribed with some great prizes on offer. The Senior matches against the local clubs has now also finished and I’m sure that Seniors Captain Ted Young will now be able to relax following a hectic summer. I’d like to thank the Senior Section committee for organising the many competitions, club matches, and away days that bring so much enjoyment to their healthy membership. I would recommend anyone thinking of joining the senior section to do so.

Well done to Ryan Blemings who represented the Club in the Alan Curtis Scratch Trophy held at Heworth. It was won by the Ramside Hall player but Ryan did well despite not winning the event.

Many thanks to everyone who played in the Captain’s Charity Competition on September 22nd which raised £190 for Prostate Cancer UK. Well done to the winners. I hope that you enjoy your prizes of Courtesy 4Balls for the various courses. I also wish to thank the Ladies Section for the kind donation of £50 to my charity. It is much appreciated.

As you will now know, the Club is implementing the BRS Booking System, with the expected ‘Go Live’ date being October 15th. This will enable the Club to have set booking times for both members and non-members, and like most of the Golf Clubs in the region, it will bring in much needed revenue. There are many advantages of having the booking system in place and I would urge all members to register for access to the system so that you can book tee-off times on-line knowing that you can play at that time. If you haven’t registered as yet, you can do so by using this link – (there’s an underscore between members and home) and in addition, Bob King from BRS will be attending the Club on Monday October 8th at 7pm to give an overview of how the system works for members and to answer any questions.
