Captain’s Blog (G Murphy)
October usually marks the start of winter conditions, and while work has been done on the greens with hollow coring and top dressing, it’s very noticeable that the greens have recovered very quickly and are once again looking great. Well done to David and his staff for doing such a great job.
As members now know, the BRS online booking system has been implemented by the Club and, at the time of writing, 160 members have registered and are now ‘enabled’ within the system to allow them to book casual member tee-off times. Members can still register with BRS by obtaining their username from the Secretary and then using this link – Link to BRS to complete the registration.
Bob King from GolfNow attended the Club on October 8th to give a talk and answer questions about BRS which was informative and useful. As a result of going ‘Live’ with BRS we have now started to add the Open Competitions for 2019. The Gents Seniors Open is already available to book via BRS, Golf Empire, or by selecting the ‘Book tee time online’ button from the Club website, all redirect to the BRS Open Competition Booking System. At the time of writing we have added more Open Competitions and will be available to book from November 1st. This gives us a ‘level playing field’ with all of the other clubs in the area who have listed their Open Competitions for 2019.
On a personal note, October was a good month for golf. Rosalie and myself won the Garesfield Mixed Open and I won the President’s Trophy despite an excellent round from Stephen Turnbull. I also played Slaley Hall with Vice-Captain Shaun Stokoe and Paul Stonehouse (Vice-Captain for next year) and Malcolm Williams. It was a great day with lots of good craic. The Consett & District Past Captains Autumn meeting was held on October 21st and I was playing as their guest. Well done to Jeff Farnsworth and his fellow organisers for a great event, and to Gleave Curley for winning despite being run close by Gary Stafford.
The North Durham Union of Golf Clubs had their AGM at the Mercure George Washington hotel on October 26th, which Vice-Captain Shaun and myself attended. It was good to see so many representatives from the Clubs in the District, and we had a good evening in the company of fellow golfers from Whitburn, Garesfield and Heworth.
On Saturday October 27th the Club held a Race Night for Club funds and there was a decent attendance, although we could have done with a few more. However, those who attended had a great evening with special thanks to Gary Elliott for organising it, and Stephen Allison for doing some of the MC work!
As we approach November, we have the presentation evenings, with the Gents presentation evening being on Saturday November 10th. It should be an eventful evening. The following day is Remembrance Sunday when we remember those who served their country, and those who died in doing so. Vice-Captain Shaun and myself will attend the Remembrance parade and will lay a poppy wreath on behalf of the Golf Club. Any member wishing to join us are most welcome.
Enjoy your golf despite the current cold weather and good luck to those who are playing in the winter league.
