Captain’s Blog (G Murphy)
Well, this is my final blog of my Captain’s year. The year has gone extremely quickly and I’d like to congratulate Shaun Stokoe on his appointment as Captain for 2019. Shaun has been a great Vice-Captain and I’m sure that he will do an excellent job along with his Vice-Captain, Paul Stonehouse.
The year has been most enjoyable with plenty going on, in and around the Club. Being involved in the running of the Club enables you to see the amount of work that volunteers and the Directors undertake behind the scenes that many members are unaware of. The only disappointment is that the Gents team were relegated from a very competitive league, despite a great 2nd half of the season. I’m sure that Shaun will get the team promoted back at the first time of asking with a strong squad.
I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make my year so enjoyable. Brian and Nicola for the food and events, Joanne and her staff for doing a great job at the bar, David and his team for great work in keeping the course in great shape, the Directors for their support and the general running of the Club, the various sections for their help and donations to my charity, the team sponsors Advanced Financial Planning and Malcolm Williams, and my wife Rosalie for doing all of the organising behind the scenes.
I’m delighted that we now have the BRS booking system installed within the Club, which enables us to compete with all of the clubs in the area, particularly for Open Competitions, which has shown a big increase from golfers from outside of the Club. This will also allow visitors to book and pay online instead of taking a chance on a tee-time being available when they arrive. Local clubs using this system have increased green fees from visitors, which in turn, helps to keep membership fees down.
On December 6th I attended the Senior Section Christmas dinner at the Golf Club. It was a great evening with excellent entertainment and food for more than 60 attendees. The Seniors Section has increased in number this year, mainly down to good organisation and a friendly atmosphere.
On December 15th I attended the Durham County President’s Biennial Dinner at Durham Castle with Finance Director Mel Elliott, and recently retired Secretary, Vince Kelly. It was great being there to see John Kennedy receive an award for the number of appearances for the County team. Well deserved John!
On New Year’s Eve I attended the party at the Golf Club to see in the New Year. A great event organised by Stephen Allison, with excellent food provided by Brian and Nicola, and a well organised bar run by Joanne and the team. In addition, I was surprised and delighted to receive the money from the raffle for my charity, amounting to £165.
I would like to wish all members a Happy & Prosperous New Year, and the Section Captains Shaun Stokoe (Club Captain), Jillian Hughes (Ladies Captain), Alan Askew (Seniors Captain), and Jamie Raisbeck (Junior Captain) the best of luck.
Finally, the Captain’s Farewell Evening is on Saturday February 9th. Everyone is invited to this black tie event, which includes a 3 course meal and entertainment at the low cost of £25 per person. See the posters around the clubhouse for details which will be updated soon. Please come along and support the event. All raffle money will go to the Captain’s charity for 2018, Prostate Cancer UK, which has already raised £2150 to date.
