Captain’s Blog (G Murphy)
Well, what a month we have had, with glorious weather ensuring plenty of golf, and some rain finally coming towards the end of the month to give the course some much needed water, much to the relief of Head Greenkeeper David and his staff.
Good luck to Mark Bonser, John Kennedy and Ryan Blemings who are representing the Club in the County Club Championship at Barnard Castle on August 4th, having won through the Preliminary Round in late June.
A ‘well done’ is necessary to JLO’s Mark Bonser & Janet Turnbull for the opening of the blue tees for the academy, with a special mention for top European Golfer Graeme Storm, who opened the event and spent time with the juniors, giving them valuable tuition. In addition, the Club received a lot of great PR as representatives from the Northern Echo, Northern Golfer and GolfEngland attended the event with good articles due to appear in their respective editions.
Despite having a great 2nd half of the league season winning 5 and losing only twice, the Gents team have been relegated to League 2. Unfortunately the first 7 games, which we started slowly, gave us a big task in the final 7 games. Despite the obvious disappointment for everyone, I’m sure that the team will do well next season and will be promoted back to League 1. I would like to thank all of the players for their commitment, dedication and understanding throughout the season. There’s a great team spirit in the squad and I’m lucky that everyone always gave 100% without question.
I must congratulate the Senior Section for the Gents Senior Open held on July 19th. A great turnout and raffle which would not have been achieved without the hard work that goes into holding an event for members and visitors alike. I played in the competition and had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
I’m delighted to say that the Directors of the Club have sanctioned the installation of an online booking system. The BRS system, owned by GolfNow, is used by virtually every golf club in the area and has many uses. This will eliminate double bookings and will hopefully bring additional revenue to the Club by allowing visitors and members to book tee-times on-line. Research has shown that clubs using the system attract a lot more visitors, and therefore revenue, than clubs who do not have a booking system. More information will be available soon and it is envisaged that a members forum will be made available with a representative from GolfNow coming to give an overview of the benefits.
Finally, a reminder of Captain’s Day on Saturday August 11th. There will be a stableford competition open to everyone, with a halfway house serving refreshments, with donations for the Captain’s charity. In the evening there will be a presentation of prizes, after which there will be a disco, buffet and raffle. There’s no cover charge so everyone is welcome to come along and have a great night, with all proceeds from the day going to Prostate Cancer UK.
