Captain’s Blog (G Murphy)
August has been a busy month despite the league matches being completed at the end of July. The month also brought some much needed rain which has transformed the course, and full marks to David and his staff for their hard work in making the course a pleasure to play.
On Saturday the 4th John Kennedy, Mark Bonser and Ryan Blemings competed in the three man team event at Barnard Castle. The team did well in very hot weather, but the eventual winners, Darlington, produced some great golf and were worthy winners.
I had a very enjoyable ‘away day’ with the Senior Section at Tynemouth Golf Club on Thursday August 9th. As usual, it was an excellent day with great company and very well organised. A nice two course meal rounded off a very good day.
I had my Captain’s Day on Saturday August 11th in hot weather on a course in excellent condition. I was delighted with the number of entries from all sections for the competition, and this was rounded off in the evening with a big attendance and a very good evening of entertainment. There are many people who deserve a mention in making the whole day a success, and these include Brian and Nicola for the food, Joanne and her staff for being behind the bar all day and selling raffle tickets, Craig in the Pro Shop for his help in organising the competition, David Stokoe and his staff for having the course in great shape and preparing the spot prize positions, the many friends and members who supplied raffle prizes, and Mrs Pat Burton for helping to manage the halfway house, which was a huge success. Finally, it would be wrong not to mention my wife, Rosalie, who organised the raffle prizes, cooked and baked most of the week, and who also managed the halfway house. It wouldn’t have been such a success without her organisation. Apologies if I have missed anyone, but I was delighted with the amount raised for Prostate Cancer UK, which was over £914. In addition, my thanks to the Senior Section for a £50 donation to my charity and also John Kennedy for a £50 donation to my charity from the Scratch Open.
The day after Captain’s Day was the Club Championship over 36 holes for the Tully Cup. Some excellent scores came in, but my congratulations go to the eventual winner, John Kennedy, who won the cup for a record 11th time. Well done John and also well done to Ryan Blemings and Stephen Turnbull who were joint leaders in the clubhouse for quite some time until John’s group completed their round. As an aside, the final group of three to play, had a massive audience in the clubhouse to watch them finish their round. The noise and fun must have been heard on the 18th green and full marks to Gary Kennedy, who was last to putt and managed to hole it despite the noise and banter coming from the clubhouse.
I had an enjoyable day on the 15th at Durham City Golf Club as a guest of the Consett & District Golf Club Past Captains Society. Another well organised event with the eventual winner being Geoff Blemings with an excellent round.
On Thursday the 23rd I took part in the annual Seniors/Ladies/Juniors Texas Scramble, for the Peter Beckwith trophy, which is organised by the Senior Section. Another enjoyable day, and good to see the various sections of the club joining together for a fun competition. Congratulations to the winning team of John Mitchell, Chris Morrison, Tommy Smith and Rosalie Murphy with an outstanding score, despite a number of teams running them very close.

Thursday the 30th August was the Seniors Captains Prize day. It was superb day and congratulations to Seniors Captain, Ted Young, for a hosting the event, along with his committee, for great organisation and ensuring that everyone who played left with a prize.
Early next month (September) there will be a training course for a small number of key personnel on administering the BRS online booking system. Once the training is complete we will look at implementing the system as soon as we can. This will allow members to book tee-times, but like most golf clubs in our area, it will allow non-members to view available times, and then book and pay for those times. This should generate some good income for the club and will allow us to compete with other clubs for visitors. Full guidance and information will be made available in due course. It is hoped to have a representative from the company to come and give a talk to all members about the system at a later date, on an evening to be confirmed.
Finally, on a sad note, most of you will know that our Secretary/Treasurer, Vince Kelly, is retiring in the next couple of months. I’m sure that like me, you all wish Vince the very best in retirement and thank him for his service and commitment over the 11 years in the post.
Enjoy your golf for the rest of season on our course, which is in great condition and looking better each day. Don’t forget the Charity Day on Saturday September 22nd which is open to all sections in the club, which will be a qualifying singles stableford competition.
