Introduction from the 2018 Captain

I am delighted to be the 2018 Captain of Consett & District Golf Club and I thank the Directors of the Club for giving me the opportunity. It’s a privilege and an honour.

I’d like to start by thanking the 2017 Captain, Bill Leathley for his work in guiding the Men’s Team back to League One, and for his help in my year as Vice Captain. I hope to build on that success in the coming season. I also want to congratulate Bill on his appointment as President of the North Durham Golf Union, which I know he will enjoy.

I am looking forward to the new season and also with working with the Vice Captain, Shaun Stokoe. We will do our best to ensure everything runs smoothly, particularly as there are a number of County Competitions being held at Consett this year, starting with the County Captain & Vice Captain competition on April 29th.

This Golf Club has great attributes with fantastic views across the valley, a great course kept in excellent condition by the Head Greenkeeper David Stokoe and his staff. We have a well managed clubhouse with good food, and great facilities, that cater for many various events. There is also a well stocked Professional Shop offering a range of golfing accessories.

The use of social media is now a necessity for all businesses and I’m pleased to say that this Golf Club uses it quite well, and I aim to promote the club more through this in the coming year.

My charity for this year is Prostate Cancer UK (https://prostatecanceruk.org/) chosen as it affected my late father, so I thought that their work was important and worthwhile. You will see Men Utd (rather than Man Utd as some might think) lapel badges on the bar. They are £1 so please buy one to show your support.

My Captain’s Day is being held on August 11th followed by a presentation event that night, along with entertainment. There will also be two charity competitions in April and a Race Night for everyone on Friday 23rd March. See the website for details nearer the time or the posters which will appear around the clubhouse.

Finally, I want to wish all of the Club Section Captains the best of luck in the coming year. The Seniors (Ted Young) the Ladies (Jillian Hughes) and the Juniors (Reece McVickers).

Have a great 2018 and enjoy your golf.

Gerard Murphy
