Captain’s Blog (G Murphy)
February was a cold and wintry month with some spells of snow which closed the course for a few days, however, the weather seems to be warming up, and with the clocks going forward, it signals the start of spring.
I had a round of golf at Whitburn on March 23rd with team players Mark Bonser and Ryan Blemings, along with Malcolm Williams, one of our kit sponsors, as the team have a competition at Whitburn on April 7th. It was a bright day, but the wind was blowing a gale, on the plus side, we had an enjoyable round and the course was exceptionally dry.
The Charity Race Night at the Golf Club on Friday March 23rd, sponsored by our friends at Insight Safety Ltd, was very successful and raised over £150 for my charity, Prostate Cancer UK. Those who attended were treated to a free pen and notebook courtesy of Insight Safety Ltd.
As we move into April, the competitions start to surface and I have two charity competitions on successive Saturdays, April 14th and 21st. They will be available to enter via the new booking system but neither will count for handicap purposes as they’re non-CONGU. The Men’s Team begin their league season on May 1st with an away match at Durham City. Prior to the season starting they have a friendly against the Juniors on April 17th and against Hobson on April 24th. All of the League fixtures are shown in the Club Diary in the Members area of the website.
Finally, please keep an eye on the Open Competition dates and mention them to fellow golfers from different clubs so that we can fill all the available positions. There are still a few slots available for the Seniors Open on Thursday July 19th which is usually well-subscribed and very popular.
