Captain’s Blog (G Murphy)
June is always a busy month for team matches and County competitions, and Consett were involved in all of the County events for the month.
The North Durham Golf Union Team Championship was held at Consett on June 3rd and , despite a great round from each of our 5 players, we were beaten into 2nd place by a single shot by Seaham. A great effort! This was the day after a deluge of rain which soaked the course, but full marks to David Stokoe and his staff for providing a course that was well received by players and County officials alike. A special mention also to Brian and Nicola for providing the food, and Joanne and her staff for keeping everyone served with refreshments.
We entered a number of County events including 4 Man Team event at Hobson on June 23rd and the Mixed Team event at Brancepeth Castle on June 24th, both of which returned respectable scores without winning the event. My thanks to those who represented the club in the competitions.
The County Club Championship Qualifier was played at Ravensworth Golf Club on June 30, with the 12 best teams progressing to the final at Barnard Castle on August 4th. I’m pleased to say that Consett qualified easily, so well done to Ryan Blemings, John Kennedy and Mark Bonser.
In the Gents League matches things are looking better and the last 2 matches resulted in a 10-4 win at home to Durham City and a great win at Seaham 9-5. The next match is away at Brancepeth Castle, rearranged for Monday July 9th for World Cup football matches, and following that match, 3 of the final 4 matches are at home, so fingers crossed for a good finale to the season.
The Seniors Section, which I like to be involved with, goes from strength to strength with a number of new members who have recently turned 60!! A great group of guys which is well-organised. New members are always welcome.
An early reminder of Captain’s Day on Saturday August 11th. There will be a stableford competition open to everyone, with a halfway house serving refreshments. In the evening there will be a presentation evening which will include a disco and buffet. There’s no cover charge so everyone is welcome to come along and have a great day and night, with all proceeds from the day going to Prostate Cancer UK.
Our Golf Club is one of the very few who don’t have an online booking system for members and non-members. Research has shown that we are losing revenue by not enabling non-members to book and pay for tee-off times at quiet periods. This is currently being addressed, but will not impact competitions and current booked times.
Finally, the talking point of the month was the hole-in-one by Jeff Pitt on the 16th on Saturday June 23rd. It’s a great achievement to get a hole-in-one, but to do it on a 359 yard par 4 is something else. Well done Jeff and congratulations.
